On October 5, Barbara Corcoran addressed [or "wowed"] a standing-room only crowd at More Magazine's 3rd Annual Reinvention Convention. Introduced as the "patron saint of any woman who has ever created her own career," Barbara told the highlights of her story, to much laughter and applause: how her mother taught her to use the gifts she had; how her boyfriend loaned her money to get started, then dumped her to marry her secretary; how she went off on her own and made a success of the business by being an innovator; how she sold the company for $68 million--then faced the question of, What next. She told the audience how she'd figured out her second career: By making list after list of what she'd ever liked and disliked about her various jobs (not just at the Corcoran Group but at the 20-somethng jobs she'd held before that) and then choosing the thing she liked best as her next career. That brought her to media, to various TV gigs, and finally to her current situation: as regular contributor to the Today Show, and her spot as one of five moguls on ABC's Shark Tank. She then offered More's readers a list of the 10 things she'd learned while making the transition. Some samples: "You can't change your wiring, just your packaging." "Reinvent in stages." "Your old contacts from your old field are useless--building new contacts is the name of the game." And: "In my new business, my insecurities are my best friends." The audience was wildly appreciative, swarming Barbara as she left the podium, asking for autographs and advice.
