Hot European Cities - Prague, Czech Republic
The Czech capital is a city reborn since the Velvet Revolution when, in 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully split giving birth to two new nations, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
As you stroll through Prague’s many squares, you will find Baroque and Gothic façades cheek by jowl, shops nestling under Romanesque arches and stately Renaissance palaces where the changing of the guard is still a daily ritual.
High over the city tower the spires of St. Vitus Cathedral, part a sprawling Castle Quarter that hides a maze of medieval cobbles, pastel coloured cottages and museums that cater for every interest.
A short walk from the statue lined 14th century Charles Bridge will take you to the wide open Old Town Square. A focal point of the city for centuries, the Old Town Square is also where you will find the medieval Astronomical Clock, partos of which date back to 1410. Still in perfect working order, come here to witness the hourly ‘Walk of the Apostles’, an animated clockwork show that always draws a large crowd.
Against this old world canvas beats the pulse of a modern city, alive with cubist art, street performers, a lavish choice of café bars, Bohemian restaurants and vibrant, up-all-night Jazz venues.
From Prague’s stunning architecture and ambience to the noise and excitement of the Moto GP at Brno… the Czech Republic offers some of Central Europe’s visitor highlights. Whatever time of year you decide to visit, see http://www.360travelguide.com/Czech/events.asp for a run down of what’s on when.
