"I live in Ventura, California, and have a home buying question that may seem bizarre. In this market is it wrong to offer $100,000 less on a house advertised at $499,000?"
It’s not wrong to offer any price, because there are no rules on bidding. If you want to soften the blow of a low offer however, couch the offer in a handwritten letter explaining your rationale for the low bid. And don’t forget to tell the seller how much your love their house and why, because everyone prefers to sell to someone who loves their home. If you don’t plan to finance or already have your mortgage commitment in hand, be sure to position your bid as “all cash.” Good luck!
